Chris Watkins is Director of Innovation at the Medical Research Council (MRC). His role involves leading the development and implementation of the MRC’s translational research and industry liaison strategies, which include activities such as the Developmental Pathway Funding Scheme, Confidence in Concept, MRC/Innovate UK Biomedical Catalyst, the MRC/AstraZeneca Centre for Lead Discovery, and the MRC/Industry compound access initiative with seven biopharmaceutical companies.
After undergraduate and postgraduate studies at Imperial College, Chris undertook post-doctoral research at the Royal Free Hospital and at the MRC’s National Institute for Medical Research. He has been engaged in research management at MRC Head Office since 1999, with previous roles including responsibility for the MRC’s clinical trials portfolio, the MRC’s Health Services and Public Health Research, before leading its Translational Research and Industry Engagement activities since 2008.
