Dr Brian Bowsher is Chief Executive of the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC), which is the United Kingdom’s funding agency for particle physics, nuclear physics and astronomy, for large scale science facilities and national laboratories.

Before being appointed as CEO in November 2016 Brian was member of STFC’s Council and also chaired its Finance Committee.  Brian has led a number of major science activities in both the public and private sector. Most recently, he was the Managing Director of the National Physical Laboratory (NPL), the UK’s National Measurement Institute, from 2009 to his retirement in 2015. NPL’s science outputs and impact increased significantly during Brian’s tenure; NPL also grew its third-party work by 11% pa to the point that it accounted for over 40% of the lab’s revenue. From 2012 to 2016, Brian was a member of the Comite international des poids et mesures (CIPM), the world-wide authority on measurement; he also chaired its Finance Committee. Brian continues to be a member of the International Advisory Board to the Chinese National Measurement Institute.

Whilst at NPL, from 2010 to 2013 Brian also chaired the Serco, Battelle, University of Manchester management partnership that operated the National Nuclear Laboratory, transforming the laboratory. Before joining NPL, Brian was on the Executive Board of AWE initially as Director of Research and Applied Science and then as Director Systems Engineering. After gaining his PhD in chemistry from the University of Southampton, he started his career in nuclear technology, working with the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority and AEA Technology, managing various nuclear safety research programmes including major projects in the USA and EU. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry and the Institute of Physics and an Honorary Fellow of the Institute of Measurement and Control.

Brian has been married to his wife Sally for nearly 30 years; they have one son Paul who recently began work as a gamekeeper. In his spare time he enjoys living in Dorset, fly fishing, skiing and playing the piano.
